Random note

While I was walking my dog, this lady was driving down our neighborhood and abruptly stopped to talk to me. She drew out a card and she said “Here take my card. I’m psychic.” And with a nervous laugh I replied “Um…it’s okay.” Then she drove off leaving me thinking…what the crap?? Did she think I had problems cause I was wearing all black of something? Idk….

Who is my neighbor?

Texas weather has been amazing this week! I love how the daylight hours are getting longer. Waking up to the sunshine and going home from work with some daylight just brighten up my whole day.

This Sunday we learned about the Parable of the Good Samaritan. It’s a parable familiar to everyone who’s grown up Christian. I remember a fantastic Intervarsity small group leader’s bible study we had over this passage. I felt a little saddened just remembering the Bible studies I’ve had with Amber. So although the things we went over today was mostly review I think, it was a good question to remind myself: Who is my neighbor? Jesus calls us to love those who we may think are the farthest from being our neighbor. The Bible study instructor ended by telling everyone to notย  just wait to receive compassion and love but show it to others first. To be the good Samaritan. It’s very funny though how the people in my church seem more eager to get to know that newcomers that are white than they try to get to know me. Or maybe it’s just in my head? I’m not sure. I’m not sure if God wants me to stay at this church. All I can do is to try to initiate conversations with others first. And to give love and compassion to others. Apparently they’ll be starting a women’s get together at Starbucks every Wednesday…so I hope this will strengthen the bonds between the women in our bible study.

I ate raita, chicken, picked mangoes, and naan today! ๐Ÿ˜€

The chicken and raita (Indian yogurt…or in Malayalam…thayer) I made myself :D. It’s not the best presentation (I know) cus I half ate it and I was like…OMG I need to post a picture on my blog! The pickled mangoes and naan I bought at a local Indian supermarket. I’m totally obsessed with Indian food and I want so much to learn it. Indian food is so hard to cook though and so many spices to buy!

I also went on a walk today with my dog and there’s a lot of bird chirping around…I’m assuming they’ve migrated? I was so fascinated by how these birds interact. One jay bird totally dominated these other birds and claimed this tree as his:

There the jay bird stands magnificently on top of his fork-shaped tree. Wish I got a close up but the I did what I could with my cell phone camera.

Can you see the bird in this picture?? It was so cute seeing the bird sing with all its might.

I also did a little splurging this weekend. Old Navy is having a fantastic sale on winter sweaters and long sleeves. I bought a sweater and three long sleeves for 40 dollars. Though they’re not the most stylish clothes I own, I needed some cheap longsleeves I wouldn’t mind wearing at work.

Now onward to studying! I thank the Lord for a rather nice weekend and I pray that He’ll give me strength for work next week >.<

I’m so blessed to spend my birthday with friends and family. I thank God for the ways He has shown His love to me in my 22 years…and I anticipate the journey God and I will be in together in my 23rd year. ๐Ÿ˜€

Gifts came from very unexpected places. For example, a coworker of mine baked cookies on my birthday :D.

And for the past four years I’ve spent my birthday away from family…so my 23rd was unexpectedly different. When I was 18, I was pampered and thought it was expected that I get the best things for my birthday. Now I realize the different ways my family shows their love to me. It’s not just through material things, you know? For example, my mom knows I love purple rice…so on my birthday she made purple rice with seaweed soup (which is traditionally eaten on one’s birthday).

Not that I don’t like getting presents still though :D.ย

A watch I got from Harry! A lovely surprise gift since I needed a watch that’s water resistant so I can see what time it is at work without taking out my phone.

Of course My knew about my serious makeup addiction right now. So she got this adorable Hello Kitty mon amour eyeshadow/blush palette.

Look at the colors! I was eyeing the celestial collection at shu uemura…and so I love the color collection in this palette! Unfortunately the yellow and green is too light and sheer. And some of the eyeshadows are chalky. But I realized if I put on eyeshadow primer and Maybelline’s color tattoo cream shadow in my eyes as a base, then the colors stay in my eyes with minimal fallouts. The purple and blue shades are my favorite. The blushes are cute and gorgeous. No problem with them. ๐Ÿ˜€ The strawberry macaroon blush color is a shimmery light pink while the Rasberry (did they spell this wrong?) macaroon is a barbie pink with shimmer.

I got Exposed tarte blush and received free mini Sugar lip balms since it’s my birthday month. I’ve heard sooo many good things about this Exposed color that I was dying to get it! I haven’t tried this color too much yet, but so far I’m not too happy with it. FOr my skin tone, I feel like it doesn’t show up. Maybe I need to layer a lot? The sugar lip balms are surprisingly good. If the price was cheaper I would get the full size.

I also got the Sephora pink brush collection. Unfortunately the size was smaller than I thought. They’re not necessarily travel size, but I guess I was expecting a large, dense brushes for the price of 60 dollars. The brushes are really soft and gentle on the skin. I haven’t tried using the brushes yet. Maybe I’ll put an update review here when I try them.

And I got a cute Paul Frank pen and bandage set from my friend :D. She’s so sweet….she knew I loved Paul Frank and bought it for me in her travels :D.

And finally, I got a dress from my sister. Can’t show it here cus I’ll be wearing it this weekend to Billy Bob’s!! (most likely) ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

This is more of a post for myself…so if you think I’m bragging…you can skip this entry ๐Ÿ˜€

Early celebration

I had a very looong week. I must have done 12 PCRs in a period of three days. My dang mice are so fertile and they all decide to get pregnant at the same time I guess! There were four mothers that delivered a total of 30 pups! That’s thirty mice tails I needed to cut tails. This and all the other work I had to do this week had taken a toll on me that I wasn’t able to study for the past three or four days. 1) PCR 2) cutting tails and DNA extraction 3) sacrifice 12 mice 4) go down to the ARC (where we leave our mice) and take care of the mice there 5) blood and organ organization/registration, etc. I’ve never been so stressed out to get migraines but I had a dull migraine in the past two days. I can’t wait until President’s Day!

But today was a fantastic day. Went to eat L.A. Burger in Irving:

This is the kimchi fries my mom actually really loved. I think I liked it…but eventually it got a little bit salty. Loved the idea though! Includes: kimchi, bulgogi, diced onions, cilantro (i Think? ), cheese, and something like kimchi/ barbecue sauce drizzled on top.

This is their L.A. Burger. It includes: patty, eggs (over easy…little runny…which I liked), tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, kimchi (would have preferred more of it actually in the burger), and jalapeรฑo, kimchi/barbecuey sauce….if I remember correctly. It was like one of those coronary bypass burgers from Vortex but I guess this is slightly more healthy and more palatable to Asians? I would have been blown away by this kind of stuff in high school…but since my food adventures in Atlanta were so much more awesome I wasn’t too blown away. I’m really glad to have visited a local restaurant around here that’s NOT a chain with the same, mundane food.

We decided to celebrate my birthday early this weekend so my aunt can celebrate it with us. She bought me a cake from Mozart :D:

Isn’t it so cute?? It’s a sweet potato cake.

Aren’t the bunnies so cute? I hope they’re bunnies…I was taking a picture of this cake with flash but then their eyes turned red, and I suddenly reminded of the rats we’ve been sacrificing these past two weeks…I almost did not eat this cake thinking about it O.O

Side note: The rat females are so much more protective of their young. Even if we look at the rats and their babies the rats freak out! They start piling the hay or nesting paper on top of their babies…as if that will help us forget that it has babies. It’s such a chaotic catastrophe trying to take out one of their babies to sacrifice. THe rat starts picking up each of her babies and frantically wandering around the cage in attempt to find a hiding place for it. One even tried to jump out of the cage. It’s so sad thinking about them :(.

In exactly a week from now I will be at Billy Bob’s Honky Tonk watching the Band Perry with Melissa! Eeek! So excited :D. I’ll be wearing my gorgeous dress my sister got for me for my birthday ;). I also got Exposed blush from Tarte and a Sephora brush collection from my mom as my birthday present :D. I’ll be hopefully trying out that blush along with the dress this coming weekend! I’ll post photos on my blog later : D.

I also bought “The Wind-up Bird Chronicle” by Murakami. Hopefully it’s a good read in the train.

Girl with a Dragon Tattoo

I just watched this movie and I’m traumatized. O.O. To calm my heart I’m currently listening to Forever Reign by Hillsong. God, please deliver us from evil. I’m so glad I didn’t buy this book to read. *shudder*

My birthday is coming up pretty soon and I’ve been nagging my mom about a birthday present. I know…how old am I right?? I still like getting pampered :). Anyways I’m thinking of asking for a sigma brush set. I’ve heard these brushes are pretty amazing. Apparently they’re 10% percent off right now.

โ€œSatan tells me I am unworthy; but I always was unworthy, and yet Thou hast long loved me; and therefore my unworthiness cannot be a bar to my having fellowship with Thee now. It is true I am weak in faith, and prone to fall, but my very feebleness is the reason why I should always be where Thou feedest Thy flock, that I may be strengthened, and preserved in safety beside the still waters. Why should I turn aside? There is no reason why I should, but there are a thousand reasons why I should not, for Jesus beckons me to come. If He withdrew Himself a little, it is but to make me prize His presence more. Now that I am grieved and distressed at being away from Him, He will lead me yet again to that sheltered nook where the lambs of His fold are sheltered from the burning sun.โ€

I finished the Help!

I finished reading The Help~! It was such a fantastic book I couldn’t wait to get on the DART train to read it. I’m not an avid reader…but it’s definitely been awhile since I loved a book so much to rave about it.

Next book I want to tackle: my dang MCAT books…reread Desiring God…maybe a Murakami book?

Songs I’m obsessed with these days: Queen of Hearts by Company of Thieves and 10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman

Recent dishes I made: got the recipe from allrecipes. The cookies were okay. I’m not sure whether it was the recipe or my baking skills.

My latest purchase: I decided I’ll update this on my blog so I can be mindful of what I spend my money on. I don’t think I’m off to a good start on my New Year’s resolution of being frugal with my money. I guess I’ve improved only because I have no social life and I have no one to impress here. So I don’t spend money eating out alot or buying new clothes. And I haven’t bought a lot of lip makeup…but I have spent money on make up >.<.

I wanted to do a makeup review today of most of the makeup I own. I was wary of doing this, because I don’t want to encourage myself to buy more makeup products. So I guess I’ll probably do these on rare occasions. I’d like to just share my two-cents on some of the products I bought…good and bad.

Tarte- lights, camera, lashes mascara: When Mel put this mascara on, her lashes were voluminous and long with no clumps! They also naturally curled and it really made her lashes look picture perfect. So I decided that I’d buy it myself. The mascara did lengthen and add volume to my lashes without any clumps. But it didn’t hold up my lash curls that well. I like my Estee Lauder double wear mascara better. I would not recommend this to an Asian girl.

Tarte- Glisten, Dollface, and Blushing Bride blush: I know! I don’t know why I have so many. >.<. The Tarte blushes are amazing! They really do last at least 8 hours in the face. These blushes definitely last a lot longer than the Nars blush I own. Dollface is a pretty soft pink that has a matte finish on the cheeks. I love it! I don’t have to use a light hand to wear this…I can actually layer it on my cheeks which is a plus. The glisten blush is gorgeous as well. I had the Glisten lip luster from Tarte and I loved the color so I decided to try the same color on my cheeks. Glisten is a peachy pink with shimmer. In comparison to the Nars “orgasm” blush, Glisten is more peach whereas Nars is more pink. Plus Nars has lots more shimmer whereas the shimmer in the Glisten is more subtle. And when swatching Glisten and Dollface, Dollface has no shimmer and is more pink than Glisten. However, when I put these on my cheeks…I can’t really tell the color difference. I haven’t put Glisten on alot for me to give a fair comparison yet. BLushing Bride is too purple if you put on too much…and it’s more glittery. I definitely don’t use this with my fingers cus then the color is just too much. I just use my blush brush and lightly put it on…and it ends up looking dark reddish brown on my cheeks. It’s a good wintry color, and I like it cus I’ve never owned a purply-brown blush. However, I think I could live without this color…and I don’t think I would wear it during my wedding day.

Smashbox Blockbuster holiday collection: I got this from my sister as a Christmas present this past year! I thought I would love this since I love Smashbox lipglosses. And the variety of eyeshadow colors has allowed me to experiment with colors and with make-up in general since I’m still a novice at this stuff. I can’t say this for sure cus I don’t know whether I’m just bad with makeup or whether the makeup is bad…but I don’t think I like Smashbox’s eyeshadow. I expected a lot of pigmentation, but they don’t stand out in my Asian skin. And the Smashbox eyeliner is not good for Asian eyes unless you use a primer I believe. Else the eyeliner I placed on top of my eyelids smudges right under my eyes. However, I do love Smashbox’s blush and lipgloss collection! Love them~ the Smashbox blushes last a long time on the face as well. The lipgloss is very moisturizing and nicely pigmented.

Infallible eyeshadow by L’Oreal: I absolutely love them. These eyeshadows are lot more pigmented than the expensive smashbox eyeshadows. And they last an incredibly long time with no fall-outs!

Purity face wash: this face wash is amazing. Eversince I’ve used this face wash I haven’t been getting alot of pimples. And I don’t feel like my face has been sucked dry after using it. Love~

Essie “as gold as it gets” nailcolor: I was attracted by all the gold shimmer in this nail gloss. I like it…like a clear nail polish it gives your nails a nice clean shine to it with an extra pop of glitter. But I’m not sure why I bought it since I don’t even wear alot of nail polishes.

Oh and I also wanted to share recently what I’m doing in the lab. This week and last week our lab has sacrificed some rats that are pregnant. The rats are scarier to handle than mice. They are really strong, especially when they clutch onto something and pull to get away from your grasp. My goodness one rat just jumped out of a cage yesterday!! Thankfully, it rat behind a fridge which was sort of blocked on one side. These rats have pink eyes and white fur. It was so scary to see the rat behind a dark space behind the fridge with its beady eyes narrowed on you. But gently and slowly I moved my hands over to the rat and grabbed its tail. It then started flailing wildly so I immediately shoved it back in its cage and quickly closed it. I’m so glad we don’t work with rats on a daily basis. Anyways we sacrifice the rats and take out the embryo/fetus inside its womb. Around 13.5 days, the fetuses have already formed kidneys and so we use the microscope to retrieve the kidneys out of those tiny fetuses. It’s been interesting even taking the fetuses out of its sacs. It’s like peeling off the outer skin of an onion. It was creepy/cool when I freshly cut open a rat to see the fetus sort of move inside its sac. Poor things. Hopefully it’s for a good cause. It’s so fascinating to see how similar human and rat embryos look. There are some differences obviously. At 12.5 days their tails are long. At 14.5 days they start to form a snout and and conical head. So far that’s the latest sacrifice we’ve made.
